A Book, A Landscape, A Community: Mark Zelinski’s Land Between Waters Supports the danceScape Endowment Fund

Pre-order Mark Zelinski’s new photographic book Land Between Waters through danceScape and help support the danceScape Endowment Fund — a legacy initiative investing in arts, culture, and community well-being in Burlington and beyond.

Sometimes a book is more than a book.

Sometimes it becomes a bridge — connecting art, land, community, and the stories that shape who we are.

danceScape is honoured to collaborate with award-winning Canadian photographer Mark Zelinski on a special fundraising initiative connected to the release of his new photographic book Land Between Waters.

Through this partnership, 40% of all book sales generated through danceScape will be donated to the danceScape Endowment Fund, held at the Burlington Community Foundation. The Fund supports long-term initiatives that expand access to arts, cultural expression, wellness, and movement-based programs within our community.

For Mark Zelinski, photography has long been a way to tell deeper stories about the places we inhabit and the natural systems that sustain us. In Land Between Waters, he turns his lens toward one of Canada’s most extraordinary landscapes — the Niagara Escarpment and its surrounding waterways — revealing the beauty, fragility, and cultural significance of this region through powerful imagery and thoughtful collaboration with environmental and Indigenous voices.

For danceScape, this initiative reflects something we have always believed: that art, movement, and storytelling can bring communities together and inspire people to care more deeply about the world around them.

By pre-ordering the book through danceScape, members of our community can support both a remarkable Canadian photography project and a legacy fund designed to invest in community well-being for generations to come.

About the Book: Land Between Waters

Land Between Waters is a stunning photographic journey through one of Canada’s most unique ecological and cultural landscapes — the Niagara Escarpment and surrounding watershed systems.

Through powerful imagery and storytelling, the book explores the relationships between land, water, Indigenous knowledge, environmental stewardship, and the communities that live within this region.

Zelinski’s work captures not only the beauty of the landscape but also the deeper narrative of place — how geography, culture, and history intersect to shape our understanding of the natural world.

The book also connects with global conversations around water protection, environmental responsibility, and Indigenous perspectives on land stewardship, themes that are increasingly important in today’s world.

The official launch will take place as part of World Water Day programming at the University of Toronto on Friday, March 27, 2026, 3 to 5 pm, Sidney Smith Hall, SS1074 (100 St. George Street, Toronto, ON M5S 3G3). Environmental leaders, Indigenous representatives, conservation advocates, and community voices will gather to explore the themes reflected in the book.

About Mark Zelinski

Mark Zelinski is an award-winning Canadian photographer and visual storyteller whose work spans nearly five decades.

Since 1977, Zelinski has travelled extensively documenting cultures, landscapes, and humanitarian stories around the world. His photography has appeared in exhibitions, publications, and international media, and his projects often focus on the intersection of nature, culture, and human resilience.

Through his studio, Mark Zelinski Photographic Design, he has also championed youth initiatives and educational programs that use photography and storytelling as tools for empowerment.

His work has been featured in media outlets including CBC Radio, CHCH Television, and national publications highlighting environmental and cultural storytelling.

More than a photographer, Zelinski is a storyteller whose images invite viewers to pause and reflect on the deeper connections between people and the landscapes they inhabit.

The Escarpment and Our Local Landscape

For residents of Burlington and the surrounding Halton region, the Niagara Escarpment is not a distant place — it is part of the landscape that shapes our daily lives.

From the trails of the Bruce Trail to the forests and conservation areas that stretch across the escarpment ridge, this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve has long been a defining natural feature of our region.

Many members of the danceScape community hike its trails, explore its parks, or simply experience its presence as the dramatic natural backdrop rising above Burlington and neighbouring communities.

Through Land Between Waters, Mark Zelinski’s photography invites us to see this landscape with fresh eyes — recognizing the delicate balance between land, water, wildlife, and human activity that makes the escarpment such an important ecological corridor.

Photography often reveals patterns in the landscape that we might otherwise overlook. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the meeting of rock, forest, and water creates natural forms and rhythms that have shaped the region for millions of years. Through his lens, Zelinski captures these quiet geometries of land and water, reminding us that the places we inhabit are part of much larger natural stories still unfolding around us.

A Shared Vision: Art Supporting Community

This collaboration began with a simple but meaningful gesture.

Mark Zelinski generously offered to donate 40% of book sales generated through the danceScape community to support the danceScape Endowment Fund.

The Endowment Fund, established through the Burlington Community Foundation, is a long-term legacy initiative supporting programs that strengthen community well-being through arts, culture, movement, and human connection.

By purchasing the book through this initiative, supporters help grow a fund that will continue investing in community programs for generations to come.

A Legacy of Creativity and Storytelling

This collaboration also carries a quiet personal resonance. Robert Tang’s father spent many years working as a wedding photographer in downtown Hamilton, documenting some of life’s most meaningful moments for families across the region.

Through his camera lens, he captured celebrations, milestones, and memories that might otherwise have faded with time.

Projects like Land Between Waters remind us of the enduring role photography plays in preserving both the beauty of place and the stories of our communities.

Supporting the book through danceScape becomes part of that larger tradition — one where art, memory, and community investment continue to inspire future generations.

Where Land and Water Meet

Burlington itself sits at a remarkable meeting point of landscapes. To the north rises the Niagara Escarpment, a limestone ridge stretching across Ontario and forming one of Canada’s most important ecological corridors. To the south lies Lake Ontario, whose waters have shaped the region’s climate, trade routes, and communities for centuries.

Between these two forces — land and water — generations of people have built lives, cultures, and stories.

Through projects like Mark Zelinski’s photography and community initiatives such as the danceScape Endowment Fund, we are reminded that the places we live are not simply geographic locations — they are living landscapes filled with memory, creativity, and possibility.

Sometimes a single photograph — or a single book — can help us see those connections more clearly.
