Building Confidence, Connection, and Community Through Dance
Rise Through Rhythm is a community initiative developed through danceScape in downtown Burlington that helps children and families experience the joy of movement, music, and connection through dance.
The program offers free community dance experiences and Pay-What-You-Can youth programs, ensuring that financial barriers never prevent children from participating.
At a time when many young people experience increased loneliness, stress, and too much screen time, Rise Through Rhythm creates welcoming spaces where children can move, laugh, connect, and build confidence through rhythm and dance.

Our Mission
To help children and families build confidence, connection, and wellbeing through music and movement, while creating accessible opportunities for youth to participate in dance regardless of financial circumstances.
Every Rise Through Rhythm experience is designed to be inclusive, welcoming, and joyful — where movement becomes a bridge to friendship, creativity, and self-expression.
What We Offer
Free Community Dance Experiences
Introductory dance events held in schools, community centers, and local gatherings where children and families can experience movement and rhythm together.
These experiences introduce young people to dance in a fun, welcoming, and pressure-free environment.
Pay-What-You-Can Youth Programs
Small-group dance sessions designed so that every child can participate regardless of financial circumstances.
Families contribute what they are able, and community fundraising helps ensure that children who face financial barriers can still access dance opportunities.
Diverse Dance Styles
Rise Through Rhythm sessions draw inspiration from a variety of styles including:
- Hip Hop and contemporary youth dance
- Ballroom and Latin rhythms such as Salsa and Merengue
- Creative rhythm and movement games
The focus is not on perfection — it is on participation, joy, and connection.
A Supportive Environment
Rise Through Rhythm sessions focus on experience-based movement, where children can explore dance in a safe and supportive environment.
Sessions often include:
- upbeat warm-ups and rhythm games
- fun group dance activities
- simple dance steps and choreography
- leadership opportunities for participants
- group celebration dances
Every class is designed so children feel successful, included, and proud of their participation.
Why Dance Matters for Children
Dance is one of the most powerful activities for helping children develop confidence, creativity, and social connection.
Movement programs like dance help young people:
✔ build confidence and self-expression
✔ develop coordination and body awareness
✔ make new friends and build social skills
✔ reduce stress and anxiety
✔ stay active and healthy
In a world where many children spend increasing time online, dance offers something simple and powerful:
real human connection through shared rhythm and movement.
Who Can Participate
Rise Through Rhythm programs are designed primarily for:
Children ages 6–10
Occasional family dance experiences invite parents, guardians, and grandparents to participate alongside children.

Our Story
“Dance gave me confidence, joy, and a voice — and I believe every young person deserves the same chance to shine.”
— Gina Mir
At just 16 years old, Gina Mir turned her love of dance into a community initiative designed to help young people experience the freedom and confidence that movement can bring.
After recognizing that many children miss out on creative opportunities due to financial barriers, she created Rise Through Rhythm to ensure every child can experience the joy and empowerment of dance.
Partnership with danceScape
Rise Through Rhythm is supported by danceScape, Burlington’s leading social dance club and studio.
danceScape founders Robert Tang and Beverley Cayton-Tang are three-time Canadian and two-time North American Ballroom Champions who represented Canada at five World Championships.
For more than 25 years, they have helped thousands of students discover the joy of dance for fitness, friendship, and confidence.
Their mentorship helps guide Rise Through Rhythm as it grows into a community initiative that supports youth wellbeing through movement.
A Community Legacy Initiative
Rise Through Rhythm is part of a broader vision to expand access to dance and movement for youth.
Through community partnerships, fundraising initiatives, and the danceScape Endowment Fund with the Burlington Community Foundation, the program is designed to grow into a lasting community legacy that supports youth access to dance for generations to come.
